May is Bike Month!

May 15, 2019

Do you remember as a kid riding bikes through your neighborhood? I remember my bike had a banana seat and streamers dangling from the handle bars. No doubt, the bike was probably purple and pink….though I honestly don’t remember! Oh, those were the days. How would you like to go back to those days of yesteryears? Well, you’re in luck! May is bike month (and if you’re late to the party then you can celebrate when the United Nations does which is June 3rd). I believe we have a neighbor or two (or three) who ride their bikes throughout GCP. There’s one in particular who rides just about every day up and down Grand Central Parkway! Good job to you, Sir!!!

How I look forward to the time when we’ll get to ride down by The Lake House!! Ok, as I was saying… according to bikeleague.org, 40% of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to get to work. With increased interest in healthy, sustainable and economic transportation options, it’s not surprising that from 2000 to 2013 the number of bicycle commuters in the U.S. grew by more than 62 percent. That may not be so easy for us in Conroe, Texas, but I do believe that we could all ride our bikes to Torchy's, Wasabi Bistro or MOD Pizza!! Oh and I’m counting down the days to be able to ride to Chick-fil-A! Anyone else with me?

I love what the United Nations says about their National Cycling Day:

  • The bicycle is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation;
  • The bicycle can serve as a tool for development and as a means not just of transportation but also of access to education, health care and sport;
  • The synergy between the bicycle and the user fosters creativity and social engagement and gives the user an immediate awareness of the local environment;
  • The bicycle is a symbol of sustainable transportation and conveys a positive message to foster sustainable consumption and production, and has a positive impact on climate.

Let this post be an encouragement to get out and ride your bike and explore Grand Central Park. In the meantime, enjoy this picture of my husband and his bike. It was taken while he was doing a race called the Landrun 100 in Stillwater, OK in March earlier this year.

Happy riding!
