Crighton Theatre

July 02, 2019

I am no actor but I sure do enjoy a good play. It fascinates me how people “get into character” and how they have the ability to sweep you away into an incredible fairy tale. I especially enjoy a good musical. Speaking of musicals, this past February, Lee and I went to one at the historic Crighton Theater in downtown Conroe. We had the privilege of seeing “42nd Street”, which is a classic. It’s like a musical within a musical. It was very well done and kept us entertained and captivated.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with The Crighton Theatre, it is a gem of a place! Actually, it is known as “the Crown Jewel of Montgomery County.” They received the coveted “Ultimate Venue-outside the Loop” award by the Houston Chronicle.

There is so much rich history in this little theatre. The original opening night was on November 26, 1935 and featured  "Stars Over Broadway" starring Pat O'Brien. After thriving for many years, the theatre closed its doors in the mid 60’s due to the popularity of drive-in theaters and modern wide-screen movies. The owners, Frank and Hallie Crighton Guthrie, wanted to donate the theatre to the county and thus The Montgomery County Foundation for the Performing Arts (The Crighton Theatre Foundation) was formed. After a major capital campaign, the Crown Jewel was renovated and opened again on January 25, 1979. For the full history and all of the details, click here.

What a great way to support the local arts in our Community. I highly recommend checking out one of the many upcoming performances. Here is a list of what’s to come:
