Conroe Band Flag Program

Conroe Band Flag Program

January 20, 2020

I love the diversity found within Grand Central Park and I’m not just talking about the people. When Lee and I cruise around the neighborhood, we get to see splashes of the resident’s personality by the various landscaping designs they’ve chosen. We see everything from very simple to more elaborate designs that look like they could be featured in the Fine Gardening magazine.

There is a particular time when there is a sense of “uniform” observed within Grand Central Park that I absolutely love and that’s when the American flags come out. Yes! Six times a year on Patriotic holidays, flags are dispersed throughout Grand Central Park on behalf of the Conroe Tiger Band and residents who choose to participate in the flag program. The program costs $40 per year to receive a flag in front of your house that will be picked up a day or two after the holiday. It looks so good and the proceeds benefit our local High School. It’s a win / win.

If you’re not a resident of Grand Central Park, you could move here as fast as you can (wink, wink) or participate in the flag program in your neighborhood if you live in Conroe, that is. For additional information, contact flagswithpride@conroetigerband.com.

The national flag holidays for the 2020 subscription cycle include: President’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Patriots Day, Veterans Day and Pearl Harbor Day.

I thought it would be appropriate to share a few fun facts about the American Flag:

  • The first original flag was adopted on June 14, 1777 by Congress and displayed 13 stripes and 13 stars (for the 13 original colonies).
  • There are more stars than stripes! There are 13 stripes and 50 stars. The stars represent the 50 states.
  • The current design of the U.S. flag is its 27th; the design of the flag has been modified officially 26 times since 1777.
  • The current flag, with 50 stars and 13 stripes, was designed in 1958 by Robert G. Heft, a 17-year-old high school student from Lancaster, Ohio. President Dwight D. Eisenhower chose his design out of 1,500 entries.
  • The colors of the flag have important meanings. Red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.

The next time there’s a Patriotic Holiday, take a look at all of the flags within Grand Central Park!
